Ladies' 1sts beat Cambridge City 4

Cambridge South were hoping to build on their excellent win against March last week and were expecting another tough match against a young and fit Cambridge City side.

However, as it turned out, this was actually a comfortable win. South started well and were always on top. They went one up after five minutes when centre half Gemma Thomas passed to right wing Jo Read and her shot from the edge of the D was turned in by striker Tash Cox. Shortly afterwards, South were two ahead, a short corner struck accurately and fast by Gemma giving no chance at all to the City keeper.

City immediately made four substitutions but the new players were still unable to find a way through the strong South defence. In one of their few attacking plays, sweeper Ruth Jempson for South was unlucky to suffer a nasty cut to her chin following a swipe from an over-enthusiastic City forward and had to go off for treatment, ably assisted by Cassie Ragnauth's parents. After some swift rearrangement, South regrouped and held out well until half time.

The second half went in a similar vein to the first. South scored their third goal not long after the break, with Tash Cox persevering against some desperate City defending to force the ball home. From then on South were always coasting to victory and although City had quite a bit of play in the last quarter, they rarely managed to trouble the South keeper.

After another promising win, South will be looking to continue this good form in their last two league matches before Christmas.

Player of the match was Gemma Thomas, who controlled the midfield and added a goal for good measure.
