Ladies' 1sts lose to Wisbech Town 2

Cambridge South Ladies met Wisbech on Saturday at the Abbey in their second game of the season.

Wisbech started strongly, a good attacking force prompting South's goalkeeper, Cassie Woodfin, to make some fine saves. But it didn't take long for South to get into their stride, with fast attacks on both wings. Tash Cox also ran well as centre forward and, like Emma Clarke, was unlucky not to score.

Cambridge South did find the back of the net first but the effort was disallowed, a Wisbech stick adjudged to have tapped in. Both sides redoubled their efforts after this drama and the half ended with plenty of end-to-end chances, but the score still 0-0.

The second half started in much the same vein. South had many chances but just couldn't find the goal. Then, midway in the half and somewhat against the run of play, Wisbech scrambled a controversial goal that seemed similar to South's previously disallowed effort.

South battled on, with Becca Lumb in midfield working hard alongside Liz B, who made some excellent tackles to bring an attack. With only minutes to go, Wisbech squeezed another goal, the last of the game. But right to the final whistle battling Cambridge South displayed real commitment and never stopped pushing for a goal.

After the game, courtesy of Liz T and Becca, both teams enjoyed tea and delicious sandwiches (in the foyer!) and, despite the defeat, South can be pleased at the performance shown.
