Ladies' 1sts draw with Bourne 3

After an early start to get to Bourne for a 10am push back, Cambridge South, sponsored by PwC, were determined to get something out of the game, but with several key players missing a new look line-up was called for.

The game started with some end to end action. However South were soon required to rearrange their formation again when Bourne crossed the ball into the D, where their striker lifted the ball into Ellie Raffan's head resulting in much blood. Julie Sadler was pulled back to centre back and Louise Gutteridge came on to left wing.

Moments later, South had a hit on the left hand side. The ball was switched round the back to Margot Overbeek who passed it up the line via Bek Rhodes to Liles Dee, who ran towards goal and crossed for Louise Gutteridge to tuck away her first goal for the club. A great sweeping move.

In the rest of the half, Liles had a few more attempts on goal but they all contrived to just creep wide. Bourne thought they had scored when the ball went into the bottom right hand corner of the goal, but the initial hit had occurred a mile outside the D. However neither umpire seemed sure of what had happened and for once South complained louder than the opposition celebrated, and the goal was correctly not given. South went into the break with a well deserved lead.

With boyfriend/supporter/temporary physio Steve having patched-up Ellie, she bravely returned to the action for the second half and had a storming game marking Bourne's centre forward. South had several more periods of attacking play, but just lacked that killer instinct. Bek Rhodes, Sarah Martin and Liz Tattersall were working hard as the new look midfield, with Liles Dee, Rachel Moyes, Julie Sadler and Louise Guttridge sharing the forward duties. The defence of Margot Overbeek, Ellie Raffan, Jodee Davis and Gemma Thomas was solid but Bourne's pressure finally resulted in a goal with thirteen minutes to go to level the game.

This made Bourne more determined to score but South held on thanks to another outstanding performance by Cassie Woodfin in goal. South were unlucky not to score a second goal, but the point was a great result considering the distance travelled and the 8am start on a Saturday. Well done to all those who played adapting well to the new line up, and thanks to our travelling support.
