Ladies' 1sts lose to Newmarket 1

The third meeting between these teams this year: on both previous meetings South had conceded three, but optimism was high, and South were aiming for a victory.

Cheered on from the side by their growing band of supporters, including the newest addition Freyja who managed to open an eye to acknowledge that something was going on (Congratulations Cassie), South started confidently, not allowing Newmarket into their D. However, Newmarket's defence was too strong and seemed to block all the attacks made by South's forward line of Tash, Jo C and Jo R.

The game changed when Newmarket substituted their centre forward and the number 10 made life tricky for the South defence. Moments later Newmarket pounced on the first loose ball in the South D and flicked the ball past a helpless Loopy to go 1-0 up. Positively, South didn't crumble and kept fighting hard, but lost Liles midway through the half after her finger got stuck between two sticks and started to swell up. Jo R dropped to fill in the gap in the middle and Louise came on at right wing. Their efforts were rewarded on the stroke on half time when the ball was bundled home by Jo C, her first goal for the club.

South went into the break feeling upbeat about the first half. Liles came back on after it was deemed her finger wasn't broken and South worked incredibly hard to keep Newmarket at bay. Becca played a storming game taking the ball off their forward and keeping her relatively quiet on the pitch. But the deadlock was broken after Newmarket shot in the D and it was deflected into the goal by an out stretched Gemma (oops, sorry guys). Before the end Newmarket added a third tucking the ball under Loopy.

Despite the score line South played well and will be hoping to get revenge in their fourth encounter after Christmas. But at least the weather was on our side as the threatening rain clouds waited for the men to kick off before flooding the pitch, therefore keeping our supporters (Emma, Julie, Cassie, Freyja, James) dry.
