Ladies' 1sts beat Saffron Walden 3

Seeking to reverse the loss inflicted by Saffron Walden in the league cup three weeks ago, Cambridge South, sponsored by PwC, were determined to win this league game and keep themselves within touching distance of the top two teams. Right from the start their passion and determination showed through.

With the toss being won South elected to push back first. From this the ball was fired up to Liles on right wing, who drove at goal and was awarded a short corner, shortly followed by a second short and finally a flick. Gemma stepped up to take the flick and fired the ball high left past the outstretched keeper to give South an early lead.

The onslaught didn't end, South pushed hard with some clever passing moves between the forwards, Liles, Tash and Hayley and many attacking moves down the left hand side. The second goal came midway through the first half from Liles who converted a hard cross into the D, soon followed by Tash's first goal of the game as she tucked the ball smartly under the keeper as she raced out.

Despite the score line, Saffron Walden were always dangerous on the break with the defence, Bek, Becca, Julie and Ellie working hard to keep their forwards away from the danger zone. Ellie's display of channelling and superb tackling rightfully won her the MoM award. But somehow South conceded during the first half, then an attacking move down the left resulted in Sarah passing to Hayley who crossed the ball into the D and Gemma pushed it home to take a 4-1 lead into the break.

Jo Cobbe came on for Hayley shortly after halftime, who had been playing for most of the first half with a swollen wrist after getting hit fairly early on. South took a 5-1 lead through Gemma who tucked the ball under the keeper as she raced out. Saffron Walden never let their heads drop and were soon back in the game as they scored two more goals, the first from a short corner and their second was a solo effort from their centre forward. But South finished off the goal fest with two further goals, one from Tash and the final one from Gemma.

Julie, Jo and Liles combined well down the right and Bek, Sarah and Hayley/Jo worked well down the left hand side. All in all it was a great team effort from the defence to the forwards. The win sees South climb to third in the league, equal on points with Sawtry.
