This was the first external friendly of the season and we welcomed a number of newcomers to the pitch including Claire, Caroline, Cat and Louisa as well as the return of the legendary Cassie. This was also the debut appearance of cap’ns Virgil and Harry together, and of Loopy Lou in the outfield.

After a minimalist team talk from Emily/Harry, Cambridge South were straight away on the ascendancy with a great run from Parker (Gemma) to the back line, who pulled it back to be only narrowly missed by Caroline.

I cannot remember exactly what happened but there was some great passing, moving and support. Eventually a run into the ‘D’ by Virgil resulted in a close range conversion to give the birthday girl her first (of many I’m sure) of the season. After some more great (everything was great) play, including some excellent battling by Cat in the midfield, sterling defence by Louisa, Ellie, Becca and Jodee, and narrow misses, Claire finished off a move that began in the midfield to give us a 2-0 lead for half time.

In the second half Saffron Walden came out attacking, with what we think were 5 forwards. One move did almost come to something but was thwarted by an incredible reaction save from Cassie, ensuring Cambridge South would keep a clean sheet. Despite tired legs South battled on and always looked favourites to win 50:50 balls. There were many great moves with Claire, Caroline and Gemma linking up fantastically. Further goals by Claire and Gemma gave South a comfortable 4-0 win.

Despite having never played together, South worked really hard for each other, communicated and supported well. All in all things look promising for the coming season. There was not a vote for Lady of the match, however Cassie was later proposed (because she made the whole sideline whoop!) and the decision seconded by the vice captain. Jolly good show.
