Ladies' 1sts beat Cambridge City 3

Cambridge South Ladies first team, proudly sponsored by PWC, were once more pitted against local rivals Cambridge City 3rds. Having won this fixture 2 weeks ago South were aware that City would come out hard to get revenge, and indeed this was the case. South were punished if they hung onto the ball too long and needed to raise their game. Worryingly after only 5 minutes Emma was involved in clash that aggravated her pre-existing shoulder injury, luckily Claire was waiting in the wings to take her place.

After absorbing pressure and neutralising a couple of City penalty corners South threatened on the break, with quick thinking from the backs on free hits. Hayley weaved past 3 city players to set Claire off on run into the D, this time to no avail. The City keeper was quick off the mark. The next run went all the way to the last defender, where Hayley slipped a ball past for Caroline to sprint onto and slot the ball past the out rushing keeper. South were 1-0 up and rampant.

More pressure came as Liles and Caroline attacked well down the right wing, always looking to cross for the encroaching forwards. Claire scored the second with some great individual skill. Cambridge City never gave up and battled on winning more PCs. Having dealt with one penalty corner Ciara brought the ball out of defence and spotted the run of Liles, playing a great long ball up the pitch. Liles picked up the ball on the top of the D, used her strength and skill to beat a defender and was then one on one with the keeper, no messin' South were 3-0 up on the stroke of half time.

In the second half City again came out strong, Bek and Ciara worked well in the middle to break down any central offence, whilst Julie and Ellie ran their socks off up and down with their wingers. Cassie was left with little to do. Eventually the South midfield took control once more and threaded passes through for all the forwards to have attempts on goal. Gemma's runs from the midfield left city players wondering what just flew past them, but even with her new super stick, a goal did not come.

Unfortunately for South the City keeper was on form and South were unable to convert any out of a string of penalty corners. In the end South had the majority of the chances and were deserved victors. After the game Hayley, the on-pitch captain, praised her team for a solid performance and great effort in all quarters.
