Ladies' 1sts beat Ely City 1

Before this game Cambridge South, sponsored by PwC, were just 2 points ahead of 3rd place Ely. With this knowledge we intended to come out all guns blazing to maintain our position in the upper echelons of the table. Gone are the days where South dominated games and could not put the ball in the back of the net. Another emphatic win this week was well deserved and involved some really nice passing moves. It was a pleasure to be on the pitch with one touch passes, leading runs and great support form all players. This week, most significantly, the penalty corners came together. Ely had two attempts on goal the whole game (which were unfortunately for us goals!) and I think it is fair to say the score reflected the play, and in fact it could have been so many more with near misses and one shot hitting the post for South.

The scoring was opened with two Anne-style reverse stick sweeps from Hayley and Gemma after 10 minutes. We were cruising at this stage until the Ely centre forward quite frankly skinned us and got a deflection on her shot that sent it into the roof of Cassie's net. A lesson for South not to sit back on their laurels. 2 more goals from Tash Cox and Gemma Thomas brought the score to 4-1 at half time. Whilst we were dominating the game we had to be aware of Ely's potential on the break.

Gemma's hat-trick goal gave South a comfortable lead, however we were once again thwarted by the speed of the Ely counter attack, bringing the score to 5-2. Yet another (deflected) goal by Gemma just before the final whistle gave South a well deserved win. We worked hard for each other and the hockey itself was beautiful. We came off the pitch pretty darn happy with ourselves.

Thank yous: To Ely for being a really nice opposition and good company in the pub after; to our supporters, including Becca and cameramen Steve and Ian; to Daisy, Helen and Rhiannan for fitting in brilliantly despite never having played with us before; and to Hayley's dad for coming to support at the March game and then not getting a mention in the match report that week, despite Hayley writing it.
