Ladies' 2nds thrash Ely City 2

A scintillating mid-season 7-0 success for Cambridge South Ladies Seconds, sponsored by PwC, this game provided the team with a great opportunity to experiment with scoring tactics, solidify as a team and put Vicky’s advice of the last few weeks into practice.

In icy cold weather conditions (even with a 12 noon push back!) South started uncharacteristically nervously, but the standard of play was raised dramatically after Bex’s first goal 15 minutes through. Pip and Jodee coordinated seamlessly on the left wing, which was matched by Charlie and Mel’s teamwork on the right. Minutes before halftime the mood became ecstatic following two tense attacking short corners, when AI struck an impressive goal-scoring hit from the edge of the D.

The team continued to pressurise Ely consistently throughout the second half. By communicating well there was a real sense that players knew where their team-mates were and kept possession much of the time, demonstrating a more confident and considerably more goal-hungry attitude than in recent games. Unlike several great runs down the right wing in the first half where South failed to convert, Mel’s efforts finally paid off when she passed to a perfectly positioned Bex at the penalty spot – one confident sweep and another goal for South. Good support from Cat and midfielders Vicky and Jodee helped to bring about two more goals each by Mel and Bex. The defence were getting ready to put on their woolly hats as they waited for the ball to switch ends, and resorted instead on occasions to star jumps, but reacted boldly when one particular Ely-defender's remarkably strong hit outs reached the other half of the pitch.

Thanks go to Paula for bravely stepping in as goalie and well deserved Man of Match title goes to AI.
