Ladies' 1sts lose to Cambridge University 3

Cambridge South, sponsored by PWC, were looking to get back into the swing of things having had a number of breaks in play since Christmas. South were fully aware that the Uni side were likely to pose more of a threat than in the previous match (South won 5-1) this season. Indeed, the Uni's regimental training showed as they worked the ball around us like a well oiled machine. For the first quarter South clung on, showing too much respect for their opposition. A turn around came in the second quarter as South regained their sharpness and began to dominate. Slick passing down the wings left and more confident running gave South many opportunities to take the lead. However, the uni keeper was tested many times, to no avail. Goalless at half time, both teams were clearly not going to settle for a draw.

South continued in the same vein, with Gemma hitting the post, and narrow misses peppering the Uni goal with Helen in particular causing the Uni defence trouble. The Uni held strong and the keeper smothered the ground shots we mustered.

A quick break by the Uni midfield resulted in a pass into the D and a quick goal, taking South by surprise, particularly as it was completely against the run of play. South continued their attacking play, winning a few penalty corners only to be thwarted yet again by a strong defence and good 'keeping.

And so it ended disappointingly 1-0 to the Uni. After the game Hayley was happy with the team's performance, everyone tried their best and it could have gone either way. Two more games left and South are still pushing for that runner's up spot!
