L2 2-6 Sawtry Ladies 1

After such a successful match last weekend, Sawtry (third in the division last year) proved slightly more difficult opposition this weekend!

The game began and we knew Sawtry were going to be a force to be reckoned with. We went 1-0 up after a Bex-Mel special… but, as enthusiastic and up-beat as we were, we knew it probably wouldn't last that long! Bex was injured in the first ten minutes and, due to having no subs, had to just stand in the opposition's D for the remainder of the match.

The rest of the team battled on, one man down, with amazing defending by everyone and some excellent saves by goalie Sarah. Our defence of Pip, Loopy, Tracy and Sam had a brilliant game, with Tracy almost doubling up as a second goalie, showing no fear with her stick and head down clearing ball after ball! Pip and Loopy also played fantastically in defence. By half time the score was only 2-1 to Sawtry, who should actually have achieved a score nearer 10-1 with the number of shots on goal they had!

After an upbeat half-time talk by Captain Mel, South had to go back on to the pitch for our defence to get a beasting again! This time a few more shots on goal by Sawtry were successful and the score rocketed up to 6-1. A glimmer of hope appeared as our midfield managed to pass the ball to Mel and she went up the pitch alone to score South's second goal.

By the last ten minutes we had two more injuries: a lifted ball broke Daisy's finger and shortly after Jo got a ball lifted into her ankle…by this time everyone wanted to go home!

The final score was 6-2, which was an amazing feat by South and a credit to Mel’s captaining skills! With subs, a full team and continued determination we will get there…
