Ladies' 1sts draw with City of Peterborough 3

Cambridge South Ladies 1sts took on Peterborough 3rds in the league cup today, needing a win to top their group and make the cup final.

The match started well for South, with several quick attacks. After about ten minutes the ball was in the goal, via a Peterborough foot and then right wing Tash Cox's chin. After some discussion a penalty corner was the result, which was probably the correct decision.

Tash gamely played on for a few minutes before being forced to seek some medical attention at the hands of experienced vet Ellie. A plaster did the trick until the end of the match but for future reference, some superglue would probably be a good addition to the team medical kit!

The rest of the first half saw strong play from both sides. The Peterborough goalie made a couple of good saves and Loopy in the South goal was sharp when needed, especially for one great save at a penalty corner. After half time there was more of the same, including an injury to centre forward Caroline, this time ice required for a nasty blow to the knee. Luckily she managed to play on after a short period of recuperation.

South dominated the half, with attack after attack, but Peterborough had packed their defence with strong, experienced players and South just couldn't find a way through.

The match ended in a frustrating draw with South happy that they had played well, but annoyed that they couldn’t get the needed win. In general though, this was a good performance, the passing was slick and there was some great link up play in all areas of the pitch. Everyone played well but special mention must go to MoM Ciara Metcalfe who put in a very strong performance at centre back and Jenny Furlow, playing at right back for the first time ever, who always seemed to be in the right place at the right time.
