Ladies' 1sts lose to St Ives 2

It's been a tough old season for South Ladies and yet again the hockey gods/goddesses were not smiling down upon us. With just eleven to start, South began brightly, pinning St Ives into their D and challenging the keeper but not converting. St Ives came equipped with some very strong, very skilful youngsters and were well drilled. A quarter in and South were struggling for a long time to clear the ball from defence. St Ives were able to dominate and capitalised with a goal.

South did not let heads drop and responded well with success down the right channel through Claire, Liles and Tash, with Georgie acting as a linch pin to spread the ball well. A break through came from a penalty corner (I had a dream about penalty corners so was feeling good) [Ed. - that's the author (Hayley) who had the dream, not me!]. Nicky injected well in place of the absent (netballing) Caroline, giving Hayley a chance to strike. This time to the bottom right corner (usually I go left - I hope no one from the opposition reads this!), the shot had enough power to prevent the defender on the post from controlling so that Tash, brilliantly positioned on a post, could poach and end South's goal drought. Woo!

However, relief was short-lived when one of the St Ives youngsters skilfully sprinted into the D and roofed her shot. Pretty spectacular. Nice one. But not for us.

The second half was much the same. St Ives came out stronger but South battled well in defence and had a few quick counter attacks. Thankfully Ellie came along to replace the ailling Hayley, sporting a swollen knee fifteen minutes from the end. South conceded once more and it could all have gone to pot but we held our composure and carried on looking for goals. St Ives were much improved from earlier in the season, South are still to find that winning formula. We also learned that Nicky does not like the word "nice" and that Hayley uses it too much. Thanks to those who came out to support!
