Men's 3rds lose to Newmarket

The Newmarket team looked awesome from the start, mainly because there was 16 of them, and they were doing all sorts of fitness and training routines.

CSouth tactics, with a mere 12 players available, were to man mark the star centre forward (Thankyou Tom South), run hard, pass sensibly, and use the width of the pitch. This worked for about 55 minutes until the superior fitness, skill, and general hockey prowess of the home team told.

Honours were pretty even in the first half. Stuart Creed on the right caused the most trouble, backed up by the assured Richard Yardley at right back, with John "The Rock" Benedikz at sweeper whacking the ball into the opposition half whenever it came close. Although Newmarket took the lead, with an unlucky deflection past the keeper, A Creed inspired response ended with John "sniffer" Greaves calmly prodding the ball in from close range.

Unfortunately Newmarket then scored 5 more, mainly from well-worked short corner routines. CSouth had their share of possession and corners, but could only make a dent in a Newmarket players face, which lost a battle with a CSouth hockey stick.

The scoreline didn't reflect the good hockey played by CSouth. Everyone played their part, in a sound performance until the batteries ran flat.

Mention must be made of the Newmarket team, who played in a good spirit, and Mick the chef who cooked a great post match tea for us all.
