Ladies' 1sts draw with City 3s

Following last week's controversial and disappointingly disallowed goal which led to a draw against Cambridge City IIIs, South approached this match with the steely determination to win and thereby reclaim their postition at the top of the league table.

Georgie's team talk really spurred us on and encouraged the team to 'be more aggressive from the start' and to 'pass in triangles'. Cambridge City came out really hard from the first whistle and produced some solid attacks. South marked their players tightly and managed to keep a clean slate, defending against a number of short corners with great resilliance. Alice, Tash and Caroline D continued to make excellent runs into space upfront which culminated in some convincing attacks. Unfortunately, about 15 minutes into the first half, Liles incurred a dead knee and, shortly after, Ellie received a ball to the cheek bone and so, for a short time, South were two players down. We rearranged the midfield and defence and managed to keep strong against an increasingly aggressive City side. Heroically, Ellie and Liles both returned to the pitch as soon as they could and we were back to full-strength (Ellie to left wing and Liles back to right midfield).

Despite City having around 80% of the attack, the south defence worked tirelessly to intercept their passing and made many impressive clearances (Julie, Caroline D, Lindsey and Ellie). The marking was fautless throughout and, much to their frustration and South's relief, Cambridge City failed to score. Cassie Woodfin was impressive in goal, making one particularly fantastic diving save in the second half by stopping and clearing a flick with her left glove just as it approached the goal line.

The whole team put in a sterling effort!
