Ladies' 1sts draw with Broxbourne Ladies 2

The L1s faced Broxbourne in the second pre-season friendly on a miserably wet day at the Leys. We were one down 30 minutes before the push back with Elaine unfortunately managing to pull her groin before the match even started which prompted a rare out-field spell for Loopy. Jessy had a fantastic debut in goal, keeping out numerous dangerous shots and dominating the D when it was needed. We went 1-0 down to a short corner in the first half, but there was some good play down the flanks with some good passing moves and some energetic hassling which won us a little possession towards the end of the half.

The second half saw everyone wake up a bit and was a much better performance. A relatively extended period of pressure in the opposition half with some great forward drives from defence from Heather, Dianne and Kim and some tricksy midfield play from Georgie, Bex and Liles led to a scorcher of a cross from Bex into Loopy who found herself on the p spot - and faked the deftest of touches (I.e. no touch but the acting deserved an Oscar) through her legs and facing away from goal, that confused everybody and it hit the backboard to bring us level. (She promises it was deliberate). We came under some heavy pressure during the second half but were much better at keeping them out of the D for the most part - some great tackling from out new players at the back made all the difference. One such good clearance led to a pacy counter-attack that saw us attack the Broxbourne D with some force, and Alice scored an absolute blinder off her reverse to give us the lead. Said lead was short-lived when they drew level through a well-executed short once more. All in all it was a solid performance from South, with some real promise for the season to come.

Not because she did anything wrong, but because we thought she may as well get used to it.
