M2s reluctantly cede a win to M1s

Ron Oren

The M2s could be excused for feeling we were robbed of points in this game. The day started fairly inauspiciously when Sicknote Haslop pulled out of the M1s' team before the first whistle was even blown; after Oli Lamming was volunteered to fill an attacker-shaped hole in the green line-up, both teams were down to the bare 11. Undeterred, the men in white started gamely and put early pressure on the home defence. That didn't quite work out, though: return pressure caused a little defensive hiccough in the former of a certain McCulloch through on goal, and we were 1-0 down.

Credit where credit's due though; heads did not drop as the M2s showed our mettle and took the fight right back up the pitch. Putting pressure on the M1s' defence, good marking and quick interceptions created havoc with their 16s and started to generate chances and a short corner. In an eerily similar move to last week, a wide injection was given right back to Mr Venner who slipped it past an outstretched goalie. From here on, the game was perfectly balanced, with chances on either side of the pitch but neither team gaining the definitive advantage.

The deadlock was broken when an unlucky deflection hit Dave Halse on the eyebrow, leaving him trussed up like a prop-forward and needing a couple of stitches. The game got downgraded to a 10-a-side but the increased space clearly did not suit us. After a lucky escape or two (thanks, Pearson!), it was eventually a fluky mishit that looped Shahbaz and flummoxed Matt to plop into the goal. With scant minutes to go, we pushed forward as hard as we could but couldn't find that elusive equaliser.

It was a good performance by the whole team, who were unlucky to go away without any points. With three solid games in a row, we're getting a bit of momentum that will help us to get points from the next few weeks!
