M1 2-1 Wisbech Town Mens 2

Jim Thorpe

Cambridge South took an important three points from this tense fixture, leaving Wisbech with mounting problems at the bottom of Division 3NW. Anything short of a victory would have been a disaster for the home side but when they conceded a penalty flick within the opening five minutes, it became apparent that they were going to make it hard from themselves.

The resultant flick was athletically saved by Steve Parker, making his first appearance of the season, and this was the wake up call that South required. They displayed a renewed sense of urgency and began to take the game to Wisbech, with good progress being made down the right hand side. This pressure only resulted in Wisbech taking the lead when South were caught on the break.

Tensions were running high and this permeated the home side's play, insofar as their play, although full of effort, was not paying the dividends that it deserved. It took a Steve Fleck shot taken from an acute angle to beat the Wisbech keeper just before the break to even the scores.

The second half took much the same shape as the first, with South applying pressure and being unable to capitalise but continuing to look vulnerable on the break. Rob Sprawson was carded for a blatant obstruction and one or two others had quiet words passed on to them by the umpire. The match looked to be heading for a draw before Imran Tayabali managed to bundle the ball over the line with five minutes to go, giving South the full three points.
