L2 0-3 Cambridge City Ladies 4

Hannah Kenyon

This was the L2s' debut match on the new pitch and everyone was excited to try it out. The rumours were true about the bouncy pitch, with warm-up hits bobbling around.

We knew it would be a tough match against our City rivals but we set out with high hopes. City were quick to start a high press, keeping the ball firmly in our half. South kept strong, moving the ball around defence. However, South couldn't keep it up forever and some good ball movement from City put the ball around the back of the D and into the goal from a very tight angle.

Despite the pressure, the South defensive line made a brilliant clearance hit, slipping the ball through several City players onto Dani's stick. Sprinting down the length of the pitch, Dani used her speed to outrun the City players. Unfortunately, with no one to support her, the ball got stolen by City.

Some further forays down the wings were snuffed out by a strong City defence, who were not forgiving on any slow passes. Another attacking play from City led to the ball in the D once more. The second shot looked to be saved by our valiant keeper, Ali G, but the ball traitorously rolled over the line anyway, giving City a 2-0 lead.

After a much needed break, South regrouped to the hope of a better second half. By this time, the sun was creeping out, making the second half a sweltering affair. Rallying well, the 2s were determined to get possession of the ball. Working the push, they managed to pressure City free hits resulting in one of the players shouting, 'I've got nowhere!'

Ellie marshalled the backline well, putting in several crucial tackles around the D. Unfortunately, they worked around the back with speedy forwards and managed to score another goal.

South kept their heads up and started to press back into the City half. We made several good attacking plays, even incorporating a little bit of football in midfield. However, we weren't able to convert any of these into goals.

A well fought match overall, and some training on the new pitch will definitely help. Special mention to Lottie for taking a ball to the arm and bravely playing on, and also to Emma for putting her knees on the line to defend.
