Men's 1sts beat Peterborough Town 4

A solid start for their first league game against a young Peterborough side saw South's first team collect a good opening day win. South came out of the traps brightly and were one up within three minutes. Good passing up the right hand side followed by a quick switch across the D allowed Rob Hay to finish emphatically from close range for the opener. A stunned Peterborough were further behind less than ten minutes later when another text book attack up the right and firm cross allowed Andy Rose to slam home from close range.

An extended period of South pressure ensued with John Tostevin and Keith Simpson in particular getting forward well to support the attack. Some well executed off the ball movement afforded Rick Erleback the chance to drive forward from midfield and slip the ball to Sanjay Agarwala for a simple far post tap-in. There was even time for a fourth before the break when Andy Rose lifted a sweet reverse flick into the bottom corner for his second.

In the second half Peterborough presented a stiffer challenge and took the opportunity of a lapse of South's concentration to score via an unmarked lone striker after fifty-five minutes. This wake-up call rejuvenated South and was epitomised by a superb Peter Carey run into the D which could only be halted by a blatant trip. Sadly, however, Andy Rose's hat trick was denied as his resulting flick was well saved.

Sanjay Agarwala's constant effort came into fruition when he scored a deserved second this time stemming from the left. Agarwala turned provider for the penultimate goal came when another slick move down the left wing found Rob Sprawson free at the top of the D to strongly smash home. Matt Murray rounded off the goal scoring when Rob Barton picked him out after a well worked team move in the final moments.

South demonstrated they are capable of some neat flowing hockey at times and excellent off the ball movement and committed tackling were prevalent throughout the match. However, they are under no illusion that next weeks trip to Market Deeping will provide a far stiffer challenge.
