Big Money Shots

Izzy MacDonald-Parry

As dusk settled in across Wilberforce Road the majority of the country was sitting down for tea and cake. Not the L2s: we were handed the late game (groans) so were limbering up to play nemeses, City 5s.

A somewhat sluggish start from the L2s saw City put serious pressure on the South defence, with Hannah ‘Holler for my Hunnies’ Muncey making a great save by flicking the ball backwards over the goal. City however scored first, a nifty little post deflection. With dread setting in, the L2s came alive. A great ball sent down the wing by Emma-Rose saw a lovely cross in and Kendra’s first goal. South reset. What felt like literal seconds later, Kendra was charging up the left wing with the ball, crossed into Eimear who tapped it in on the right post.

Two-one to South and looking promising. Some great hit outs from Roisin created some brilliant runs up the wings from Kendra, Katie and Emma-Rose. It was only a matter of time for another one. On cue, a short corner for South: Izzy steps up, lovely hit, unfortunately straight into the keeper. A bit of a scramble and Izzy had the ball again; this time with a slight flick she pushed it into the goal. Three-one to South.

South’s fourth goal, unfortunately, went into our own net (Roisin somehow managed to avoid Lemon here) as a result of a great break by City and a hit from the top of the D, which even they admitted was unfortunate to have counted. Three-two to South.

Half Time – Jelly Babies ensue.

Continuing on with our great play from the first half, South put on the pressure again, Katie roaring into life and storming up the left wing time and time again. Similarly, on the other side Emma-Rose delivered ball after ball up the wing. Eimear had the first goal of the second half, a beautiful deflection of a ball that Katie (to quote David) absolutely smashed (not quite the word Dave used!) into the D. Four-two South.

Continuing pressure on the South defence kept Roisin, Hannah and Janette all working hard, Hannah delivering countless balls up to Emma-Rose who then passed them on to Eimear. One more goal from Izzy as a result of a brilliant cross in from Emma-Rose, slapped into the bottom left corner. Shortly followed up by a great strike from Kendra, making it six-two to South.

Upon deciding that six was enough, South went full force defensive mode. Tensions rose with increased pressure by City, with captain Dani telling goalkeeper Emma to, ‘Kick the ball harder.’ Emma obliged, Dani got in the way, earning both players a Lemon.

Hannah was MOM for two reasons, first being her brilliant defensive play, the second being her excellent one-liners - to name a few: ‘Yes, Izzy. Go for the big money shots!’ and ‘Great legs, Eimear.’ Eimear also with votes for man of the match for great attacking play and playing with a lung infection.

All round a brilliant game from the L2s and some of the best hockey we have played all season.

'Emma, do you think you could make sure you kick the balls away as hard as possible this week.' (see other LOM) Throwing herself into the ball (at least it wasn't her head this time!)

For kicking the ball out 'hard' into the skipper's chest in the defensive D: cue short corner.
