M2 7-1 Horncastle Mens 3

The emphatic scoreline finally achieved did not look likely in a tightly contested first half. Cambridge South got the first after ten minutes, with a well worked move up the right. John Greaves passing in to Rob Barton, thence to Jim Lockhart, whose shot hit the post and rebounded back for Barton to scramble it in. Horncastle responded from a set play, getting the ball in via an unmarked forward at the far post. Thereafter the home team were on top but Tim Poole stood firm, and newcomer Neil Clark managed to clear one goalbound effort from off the line.

The second half was a different story, and Cambridge South rattled in a spectacular combination of goals. Barton bagged another three, one deflected from an Adlington shot, another via his trademark reverse stick, and the last from a Stuart Creed pass, which Barton turned on and slotted home with style.

By this stage the central midfield partnership of Creed and Vincent Korstanje were running the game and the chances were coming thick and fast. Barton's strike partner, Dan Adlington, got on the scoresheet by passing the keeper with the deceptive (lack of) pace of his shot for CSHC's fifth.

The two final goals were perhaps the best. Firstly a classic right wing move by Greaves, breaking through a couple of tackles, dribbling to the by-line and delivering a hard cross to the waiting Jim Lockhart at the top of the D, who buried it as the defence watched on. The last goal came from the left wing, with Lockhart passing to Barton, thence to Adlington who smashed the ball joyously in to the net from a tight angle.

An excellent victory, preserving the Mighty CSHC 2nds' promotion push.

Man of the Match: Stuart Creed, for his all round attacking midfield performance.
