Pidgeon Steps

The lead up to the match was better than the previous week.  We had 9 players confirmed until Spikey Mikey informed us on the day of his man-flu.  So leading into the game with 8 players was a better start than the bare six in the previous week.  Bring on the team with National League experience!

The game started well and for the first eight minutes there was parity in the scoring.  City were limited to snap shots that were comfortably dealt with by George Toynton.  Ali Edge was also acclimatising well in his first outing.  We were even unlucky not to sneak a goal as both teams threatened to score from Short corners.  This is as good as it got for the Southerners as City came out of their collective shells and passed the ball into an empty net courtesy of some excellent build-up play.  Forty seconds later they pounced on a weak pass and won a shorty. 2-0 and South were winded.  Add ninety seconds to this mixture and 3-0 was the result.

This is where South began to counterpunch and fight.  The City goalie made two outstanding saves to deny Chris Pearson from adding to his massive indoor tally.  When he was beaten finally, the City captain made an outstanding stop on the line at "Crown-Jewel" height to deny Matt Kenzie. South were down but not out!

The second half was attritional. Cambridge had a 4 man bench and it allowed them to hammer at the plucky resistance of the Souths.  The substitutes were unable to contribute after 4minutes.  This left 14 minutes of endless and frenetic hockey that was very unfortunate.  We could have scored more and they should have scored less. A special mention goes to their goalie who pulled off two world class saves from Chris Pearson.

All in all, Cambridge South's best indoor performance to date.  A small break of three weeks means that a top 3 finish is still possible with the slightly weaker teams to face in Nomads and the staff!
