M2 1-1 St Neots Mens 4

John Greaves

This clash between promotion-chasing teams was always going to be tough and hard fought, and so it proved. Cambridge South started confidently and exerted considerable pressure, gaining a number of short corners. Unfortunately we didn't convert any in spite of consistent push outs from Pannu, although Lewis in particular got in some shots. We did demonstrate good hockey, with Greaves/Creed on the right, and Devereux/Lewis on the left combining well at times. The goal eventually came from a cross from the irrepressible Pannu, taken into the D by Lewis, whose shot rebounded into a gaggle of players through whom Barton managed to bundle the ball across the line.

The second half was an altogether different story, as the superior mutual understanding and teamwork of the three or four key St Neots players began to tell. We never came to grips with their swift passing game and were repeatedly saved by the dominant defending of man of the match, Talmage, and the heroics of keeper Poole. Cambridge South were guilty of being indecisive in the tackle and not picking up unmarked attackers, due partly to inadequate fitness and organisation. South did manage to make their mark on a couple of St Neots players' heads, through a stray ball and stick, which raised the temperature somewhat. This only served to rev the home team up for greater things and most of the remainder of the game was spent in the Cambridge half, with but a few breakaways to console us. The inevitable St Neots equaliser arrived from a short corner move, from which we were unable to get the ball away, leaving the scorer with a simple task from close range.

A game of two halves and a fair result.
