M1 5-1 Bourne Mens 3

At long last Cambridge South put an end to their losing streak with a home victory over Bourne 3rds. And they did it in style too, notching up a five-one scoreline, one of their biggest wins in years. It was also somewhat appropriate that their drought-breaking success would be against Bourne, as it was against those same opponents back in December that South suffered the first of their ten successive defeats.

The opening quarter gave no clues of what was to come later however. Bourne started confidently and soon had the South defence at full stretch. However, despite fashioning a few chances and forcing a number of short corners, they could not initially breach the defence. Midway through the first half, their pressure told however, and they took a deserved lead. South heads may have gone down at this stage but they instead regrouped and forged forward for an equaliser. It wasn't long coming as a good cross from the left was turned in by Maarten Hoes, their in-form striker. This goal was the turning point. South's confidence seemed to grow significantly after that and only a few moments later, they took the lead when Rob Barton, so prolific for the 2nds, grabbed his first goal for the 1st team with a powerful shot from the edge of the D. Thus, half time was reached with the score two-one to the home side.

Bourne once again started the half strongly after the break but the wind was taken from their sails when a superb goal from Maarten Hoes from a tight angle stretched the South lead to three-one. This goal gave South the cushion they needed to relax and at last play the sort of hockey they wanted to play all season. Continued excellent attacking lead to further goals from Maarten Hoes (to complete a brilliant hat-trick) and Jonny Tostevin (a first goal for the team). At the same time, determined defending, notably from Matt Readman, kept Bourne at bay.

A feeling of relief swept over the South side at the final whistle at finally breaking the losing run. But they must also have questioned how they have failed to get close to this sort of performance all season.
