M1 1-2 Market Deeping Mens 1

Cambridge South's miserable league season limped to a fitting end on Saturday with a two-one away defeat to bottom side, Market Deeping. They thus avoided coming last in the league only by goal difference.

The game as expected was a fairly scrappy affair with neither side showing much confidence. The start was particularly so and no clear cut chances had been created by either side when out of the blue a Deeping attacker broke free from the South defence and slid the ball home expertly for the opener late in the first half.

At the start of the second half, Deeping had their best spell and they doubled their lead when an unstoppable shot was fired into the roof of the net from the edge of the area. The momentum for Deeping was broken however when one of their players was yellow carded for a bad tackle from behind and Cambridge South assumed the ascendancy. After a period of pressure, Rob Barton scored from close range following a goalmouth scramble to halve the deficit. Despite pushing forward with great urgency for an equaliser, a couple of other chances went begging for Cambridge South and Deeping hung on for a rare win.

Both teams will now head down to Division 4NW for next season and will have to improve significantly if they are to return quickly from where they have come.
