Hard Fought

Alex Baekelandt

It was a crisp Saturday morning as Cambridge South arrived at the Ivo sports complex, ready for some exercise and holistic fun. After the briefest of warm-ups, the Southies were geared up and ready for some action.

The game started with some serious pressure from St Ives, but they weren’t getting past the Chilean Citrus, Mariano. Until they did and then, logically, we were one-nil down. It wasn’t looking good. How could we possibly come back from a goal down?

Our prayers were soon answered. As if possessed, the St Ives defence passed the ball straight to Ash, who graciously accepted the gift and tapped it in. Game on. Can’t really remember the next bit but they scored [edit - P Flick after shortie had hit a body on the line]. Unideal. Could we come back from that setback?

Yes we could. A passage of play ensued in which we scored. I’ve been told it was Ed. A memorable goal [so memorable it's out of order - Ed’s goal was the one to go three-two up] to add to the M3’s collection. The St Ives pressure continued to build, making for a spicy game. Out of nowhere, Joe galloped down the pitch, evading tackles left right and centre before finally reaching the top of the D. A beautiful shot was politely guided into the back of the net by usual suspect, Ash [this was the second goal, coming a few minutes after St Ives went 2-1 ahead].

Up a goal, but down a man. Chilean Citrus Mariano’s feisty behaviour got him a yellow. It was squeaky bum time for the M3s. St Ives were all over the midfield, with pressure building and the crowds from the neighbouring football match roaring. Short after short: only the heroics of George were the difference between the two sides.

It was only in the last minute that a quick break gave us a short corner. In front of the desperate St Ives crowds, newcomer Toby scored a low drag flick to kill the game. Entertainment of the highest value; what a result!
