Tough at the Top

James Mathews

South 3s came into the game hopeful of a good result, having already beaten the other side relegated from 3NW last season.

However, we were facing top-of-table and the only unbeaten side in the division. Some last minute drop-outs meant we only had one sub. We welcomed newcomer Nick for his first South match.

The game started off fairly even, and around twenty minutes in South won their first short. Nev slipped the ball left, and Dom put the ball in the back of the net. One-nil South. We carried on battling in the first half, but Wisbech equalised around five minutes later, and took the lead just before half time. Another South short corner just before the half-time whistle caused some panic in the Wisbech D but went just wide.

The half time talk was about more movement and being first to the ball. Although we battled hard throughout the second half, Wisbech managed two more goals to seal the victory. South had several chances in the second half, but it wasn’t to be.

Other notable incidents:

  • The prediction of a feisty match was spot-on – Wisbech ended with several green cards and lots of “discussions” with the umpires.

  • Dom got angry (mainly with himself) and also had a lie down in the second half on the pitch.

  • Joe got hit on the thigh with the ball when the opposition was giving the ball back (and got a Lemon vote for it!)

  • Ash A made it all the way to the opposition D only to produce a terrific air shot.

  • Man of the Match was contested by the two wing backs, with Chris narrowly edging out Josh.

  • Toby got Lemon for skiving off and taking a trip to the beach in Skegness. He also sent some “interesting” comments on the WhatsApp group – maybe he has been having lessons off JJ?

On to next week- the derby! For the first time this season, the 2s are ahead of the 3s in the league table (only on GD) – will it stay that way after next week?

Forsook a home game to traipse up to Skeggy with the M2s. Easily influenced, clearly
