Men's 3rds draw with St Neots 5

South 3rds, sponsored by PwC, nicked a point late on in a game that could easily have been won by a splendid St Neots rearguard action.

Saints, who had made the trip with only ten men, took the lead in the opening couple of minutes when a ball ricocheted around the South D and was bundled home. Soon after this, one of the Away ten injured his hamstring, seriously restricting his mobility, and this prompted a sensible decision of "What we have, we hold." South plugged away at the now deep lying St Neots team but couldn't force their way through the crowd and the teams turned around with Saints still 1-0 up.

South made a half-time switch to a 3-4-3 formation to try and drag defenders wide and out of the D. However, a tendency to attack up the middle instead saw most attacks fizzle out before reaching the away keeper.

Finally, with less than five minutes remaining, some wing play created an equaliser. A ball was crossed from the left wing, skipper Wilco Dijkstra shot at goal, and forward Ian Evans added a deflection just in front of the keeper, giving him little chance. In the final frantic two minutes, Evans had a chance to win it, a ball deflecting to him in the D, but he pulled his shot wide from a narrow angle.
