Men's 2nds lose to Peterborough Town 4

South 2nds game with Peterborough Town 4ths fell victim to the recent cold snap, with the far end of the Perse pitch remaining ice-bound all day. After consultation with the umpires and both captains, it was deemed an unfit surface for a league game.

However, with both teams on the pitch and ready, the decision was taken to shuffle the far goal up a few yards out of the shaded patch, which more resembled a skating ring than an astroturf, and play a friendly, so at least everyone got a game of hockey.

The match, whilst unsurprisingly lacking the intensity of a league game, was a good, evenly contested one, which suggests when the two sides do meet in anger it will be an intriguing affair. Town took the lead from the opening short corner of the game, cracked into the corner. South equalised in kind when the three Ts, Tim Waller, Tom Moy and Tristen Knight combined at our first short, Tristen's intentionally faded shot wrong footing the away ‘keeper.

The second half produced more of the same, with both sides trying to play the ball around, but both finding the slightly shorter pitch seriously reduced the space to play. Town got the winning goal of the match inside the last ten mniutes, when one of the three talented kids they had on display made a good run, jinked inside to work himself some space, and took an early shot which flicked in off the near post. Neat goal.
