Men's 2nds lose away at Boston 2

Wintry conditions didn't constrain a lively mid table contest between evenly matched teams.

Boston managed to snatch the opening goal from a textbook short corner routine, but the away defence otherwise stood firm, with James Lee in particular keeping the rapid and youthful attack at bay and Andy Bleach turning defence into attack at every opportunity on the right, supported by a buzzing Gareth Peat on the wing.

Boston doubled their lead before half-time from a penalty flick, awarded after a goal bound rising shot was blocked on the goal line by Lee's body.

In the second half Cambridge South, sponsored by PwC, got more of the ball and were rewarded with a penalty flick of their own - which went unconverted. Also a number of short corners were forced, from one of which Michael Thorogood smashed the ball in from the edge of the D.

Thorogood remained the best source of attacking moves throughout, but South were unable to get the equaliser they deserved, as the final ball into the D eluded them. Boston's defence was effective and did not allow many scoring chances.

Captain John Greaves commented "We played well, in an evenly contested game. The performance was better than the result."
