Men's 2nds beat BAE Systems 1

Cambridge South 2nds continued the good form of recent weeks. With the pressure off they delivered a confident performance with some excellent hockey, in spite of having an unfamiliar team.

John Greaves started the scoring, with a characteristic poacher's effort from the classic Greaves/Lewis short corner routine, guiding the ball over the line from many feet out. John Horsley, guesting effectively at right midfield, grabbed the second, as he calmly found the net after receiving the ball in an unmarked position near the top of the D. South were passing confidently, including the "round the back" passes we have finally mastered. Both wings were used well, resulting in many good crosses, and line balls.

James Pope got the best goal of the game shortly after half time as he whacked in a thunderbolt cross first time as if he did this every game, to the wonderment of all. Horsley got his brace with a Greavesian poach as a Dave Monck shot rebounded off the keeper to the waiting forward close in. John Greaves himself was not to be outdone, when shortly after this he latched on to the ball after a Pope shot had been blocked, controlled it calmly, and volleyed it across the goal into the far corner of the goal.

The most farcical moments of the game came when Rob Barton was hit FOUR times on the foot by the same BAES defender's thrice retaken free hit. Barton finally gave up this defending lark, and disappeared up field to lurk in the D and save himself further pain.

Dave Monck, who had played commandingly in central defence and forged a fine partnership with sweeper Matt Bailey as well as making a memorable goal line clearance earlier on, netted the final goal with a fine reverse stick effort from long range as he found himself in unfamiliar territory in the opposition D.

A sunny day; six goals without reply; everyone playing their part, including those who kindly guested for the opposition. This is what Saturdays are for.
