Men's 3rds lose to Rutland 2

Cambridge South 3rds, sponsored by PwC, started brightly against a skilful, youthful and well drilled Rutland side, but were unable to turn this into goals, generally suffering from panic near the D and the fact that Rutland's keeper and defence were much better than the usual standard for 6NW.

Sadly this was also true of Rutland's midfield and attack, and the home side scored twice in the first half, once when CSouth keeper was unsighted and again as a result of multiple deflections off defenders. Nevertheless CSouth kept plugging away and had their share of possession, often set up by Paul South and James Pope in midfield or Andy Lewis, back in his favourite left wing position causing havoc.

Rutland grabbed more goals, the third from a brilliant flick into the top of the net from a short corner, and two more as CSouth failed to cover after losing the ball. In spite of a seemingly hopeless situation, CSouth kept at it, and were rewarded by a Lewis goal, as the winger pounced on to a free hit to blast the ball into goal from a few yards out. Although the away team had a number of attacks, with John Greaves and Andy Lewis unlucky not to score, it was always Rutland who looked in control, with neat passing moves often taking the ball up the pitch faster than CSouth expected. The final goal was scored by Rupert Espley as he was on hand to shove the ball over the goal line from inches after the keeper blocked James Pope's free hit.

It will take more discipline, fitness and composure to overcome teams like Rutland if CSHC3rds are to continue to challenge for promotion.
