Ladies' 1sts beat Cambridge Ladies 2

Cambridge South gained a deserved win over a strong Cambridge Ladies II team on Saturday, although once again they left it late to make the decisive score.

South put the opposing defense under strong pressure from the start and were unlucky after ten minutes when a flick from Emma Clarke came back off the inside of the post and was adjudged not to have crossed the line. Continued pressure and good runs from the forwards were eventually rewarded with a goal after half an hour when the ball was driven down the right wing and Jenny Fleck scored from close range.

Occasional forays by Cambridge Ladies into the Cambridge South half were expertly dealt with by the defense who stopped all their attacks from open play. However, shortly before half time a well worked short corner put Cambridge Ladies back on equal terms again.

In the second half South had all the pressure with several good runs from the forwards, well supported by halves Charlotte Page, Rachel Rule and Liz Brimer. Cambridge Ladies seemed to be trying for the draw as they never looked likely to score themselves due to the strength of the South defence. However, ten minutes from time a short corner strike by Liz Brimer put South back into the lead and gave them the victory.

In general this was a much improved performance. South put their training to good use, with their field placement and passing skills especially showing the benefit. Unusually they were also able to make use of rolling substitutes, having three extra players, which certainly enabled the team to finish the match strongly.
