Ladies' 1sts beat Sawtry 1

Cambridge South, sponsored by PwC, consolidated their second place position in the league with a late winner over Sawtry. Expectations were high as South travelled to Bushfields after winning 3 - 1 in the reverse fixture and as it turned out this game was a hard fought affair.

Much of the play took place in the middle of the pitch during the first half, with the occasional foray into the D by both teams, but debutant keeper Aoife didn’t touch the ball throughout the match thanks to a strong South defence. At the other end South's attack was thwarted by Sawtry's keeper. The closest South came to scoring in the first half was with the final short of the half, which hit the post before being bundled away.

The pattern of the first half was repeated in the second, with South having most of the play, and just not being able to get the ball into the back of the net. The game looked certain to be a draw when in the final minute of the game Gemma stole the ball off the Sawtry defender and ran across the top of the D before shooting hard and low into the bottom left hand corner past the outstretched keeper. In one of the closest matches of the season South rightly came out on top and are now just one point behind Newmarket and three in front of next week's opponents, Market Deeping.
