Ladies' 1sts draw with Huntingdon 1

Cambridge South, sponsored by PwC, hosted Huntingdon at a dark and gloomy Abbey pitch. In contrast to the previous week, the defence were really put to the test in this hard fought battle. Huntingdon played with very high forwards constantly switching. They played route one hockey which was effective in the beginning, as a stretched South defence conceded a penalty corner, from which Huntingdon scored the opening goal.

After this South were determined to fight back, Huntingdon defended deep with most of their players behind the ball. South won penalty corners, but again were unable to convert, with Gemma coming very close. After great pressure on the Huntingdon defence the ball was passed out wide to Emma on the left wing who dribbled to the by line (just like Sean told us to!) and pulled it back for Liles to tap in past the keeper. 1-1 at half time and South were determined to pull this back. The defence was more settled and the midfield could beat their opposite numbers.

It was much the same in the second half, South dominating the possession and coming close to scoring on a number of occasions. The last five minutes saw a surge of pressure with shots flying at the Huntingdon 'keeper. It seemed as though it wasn't to be our day, when all of a sudden Emma came out of the midfield once more with the ball and slipped it right for Liles, who had time on the top of the D to muster a tremendous shot to beat the keeper. The screams and shouts from Hayley perhaps demonstrated how hard we had worked for this winner. The defence were bothered a few times in the dying minutes with Huntingdon trying desperately to equalise. However, South held strong and move into second in the league! A frustrating game at times, but a well deserved win. Congrats again to all!
