Ladies' 1sts narrowly lose to Rutland Ladies 1

The Ladies' 1s travelled miles to Uppingham, arriving in miserble rain for this match against a team which is always well drilled and was lying just above us in the league table. The Rutland team appeared to have an average height of 5'2" and age of 13. However, inside knowledge tells us there was an ex England player amongst their ranks and they are a lot older than they look. That experience was reflected in their dominance of the first half where the were strong on the break and scored (once from open play and another time from a short). A half time reshuffle of the Cambridge team meant we were stronger defensively and put sustained pressure on the Rutland circle in the rest of the match. Laura's goal was a great deflection from the near post at a short corner and, along with great movement and passing, earned her the man of the match award.

We were unlucky not to make the final score 2-2 with several near misses on the Rutland goal and their final winner the result of a lucky deflection at a short corner. Overall, a positive match from South with good passing and possession play and our weaknesses reflecting key injured players missing on the day.
