A comfortable victory to open the season

John Greaves

A scratch combination of 4ths and 5ths, bolstered by doubling-up 3rd teamers Barton, Rosselli, Bligh and Fraser, acquitted themselves well against a competent Stortford side. We had many good passing moves and created opportunities to make the victory more convincing. In spite of unfamiliarity, and positional changes, the team demonstrated those never-give-up qualities we need, particularly the defensive wall of Ho-Rosselli-Bligh-Steed(H), who hardly allowed a shot at goal.

An early goal calmed us down as Ian Marshman, who controlled the central midfield for much of the game with his henchmen Fraser and Dijkstra, made space for a long range shot, kindly helped in by a defender. Andrew Fraser followed Ian's example and repeated the same move ten mins later to make it 2-0.

Although South were a bit rusty, with a tendency to hold on to the ball a fraction too long, we maintained our attacking approach, using the wings well, and always looked to move the game forwards. Diminuitive debutant Tom Steed battled away on the wing with confidence beyond his years to frustrate his markers, and the forwards were unlucky not to add to the total, with Greaves having a couple of raspers saved well by the GK, and Rob Barton twisting and turning, but the opposition defence remained solid to thwart him time after time whilst pulling the trigger to shoot.

We were unable to add to the half time score, but ran out worthy winners. A promising start, with things to work on.

The teas afterwards at BStortford cricket club were terrific.
