M2 5-0 Peterborough Town Mens 6

Expectations were high for Cambridge South as they tried to make up ground on the league leaders of 6NW. Good pressure from the start resulted in two swift goals. The first came from Andy Lewis, who steered the ball in after a neat forward move from the Adlington-Barton combination. Soon afterwards, midfield dynamo Suk Pannu intercepted a loose pass and knocked the ball into the D for the unmarked Rob Barton to shoot firmly in.

South dominated the rest of the half but after half time they slackened off a little. Luckily the away defence remained impenetrable, with Matt Bailey and Ian Devereux particularly assertive, and keeper Parker was rarely called upon. Black actually had more than one surging run upfield and nearly scored as he shot onto the post. Gradually Cambridge South upped the tempo again and further goals always looked likely. The central midfield partnership of Stuart Creed and Suk Pannu scuttled around effectively and much use was made of wings John Greaves and Andy Lewis. Greaves grabbed the third goal after Lewis played a free hit to Barton in the D, who obligingly hit it on to Greaves to bury it into the net from five yards or so out. He was unlucky not to add another soon after as he hit the post from a tight angle after a solo dribble down the right.

The increasingly confident Dan Adlington got the fourth following a quality forward one-two with Barton, and the final goal was the simplest as a Greaves long corner picked out Barton at the far post, who rammed the ball home emphatically.

By the end it was all one way traffic, as South kept up the pace and closed down the skillful Peterborough youngsters while managing to keep the ball away from the opposition's playmakers. A deserved victory which will make the run in to the end of the season a close battle for the promotion spots.
