Men's 2nds lose to St Neots 3

This was going to be a tough match - away versus the league leaders - and so it proved.

St Neots had most of the play throughout, and the Cambridge South defence battled manfully to keep out many short corners and other attacks, marshalled ably by Keith Simpson, John Benedikz and star keeper Jim Sutcliffe. Jim S made some spectacular saves to keep the score 0 - 0 at half time.

Early in the second half St Neots broke through with a shot off yet another short corner. South did have attacks, and forced some shorts, but were unable to get the decisive shots in. The away team did have a "goal" disallowed, a John Greaves two inch special, due to some rather forceful battering of the opposition keeper in search of the ball, which was hiding somewhere close to the keeper's pads. Soon after, St Neots went two up with a breakaway, outnumbering the tiring South defence.

South grabbed a consolation goal right at the end as the deserving Tim Waller, who had played well all game, prompting attacks and never giving up, pounced on a Rafael Mis free hit to put the ball past the keeper.

In summary, South, although committed and keeping positive for the seventy minutes, gave the ball away too often, and were unable to control the game or exert enough pressure to threaten a superior St Neots team.
