Men's 2nds beat Ely City 3

This match was a real six pointer between two teams scrapping to avoid relegation. CSHC only got three points, but it was enough to take them off the bottom of the table.

South started confidently, with central midfielders Stuart Creed and Steve Fleck driving the team forward and wide midfielders Marston and Lewis causing trouble for Ely down the flanks. The pressure soon told, with Will Marston pouncing on a Raph Mis bobbler off a short corner to score the opening goal. Indeed there could have been more goals, but too often the final ball didn't reach a player in a goalscoring position.

The South defence stood firm and managed to repel most attacks before Ely could get close to the D. When they did, man of the match and sweeper John Benedikz in particular was on hand to take command and dispatch the ball upfield away from opposition attackers.

The second half continued in the same vein, although the home team were fortunate to have substitutes on hand as injuries struck down some key players. This didn't disrupt the team as everyone adjusted seamlessly to the resulting changes. Victory was assured as centre forward Mark Reilly got on the end of the best move of the match to slam home South's second goal.

Ely City tried hard to salvage something from the game towards the end, but South played intelligently to deny them any real chances.

This was a deserved and essential win, which will give South 2nds encouragement for the run in to the end of the season. If we maintain the positive passing game, combined with committed and resolute defence, then we are a match for most of the teams in 5NW.
