Men's 2nds lose to BAE Systems 1

Another closely contested friendly game against our old friends at BAE Systems. The home team took the lead with a penalty late in the first half after South had had the majority of the play but had been unable to get past a massed defence. The goal gave BAES confidence and they got a second with a classic breakaway move soon after. Some determined dribbling led to a shot from a narrow angle with the defence powerless to stop it. South had their chances, often coming from intelligent wing play of Suk Pannu on the right, and both Rob Barton and Andy Lewis came close.

After half time South continued to press, mainly through the dynamic duo of Fleck and Creed, but lacked decisiveness close to the D. Eventually they did sneak a goal as a Lewis shot came back off the keeper to the lurking John Greaves who calmly controlled the ball and placed it into the net from his usual 2 yards out. Further pressure from South produced more opportunities, with Wilco Dijkstra unlucky not to convert from a Greaves cross late on.

A combination of strict umpiring, good use of their main weapons by BAES (i.e. their star player controlling the play from central midfield), and insufficient creativity in the final quarter of the pitch, meant that South went home defeated. There were encouragements, as CSouth demonstrated their usual battling spirit, and generally passed the ball well to dominate possession.

The most memorable part of the day was probably James Lee getting stitched up in the changing room after the game as Doctor Creed mended a nasty gash in James' knee with much enthusiasm.
