Men's 1sts beat Cambridge Nomads 2

Cambridge South, proudly sponsored by PwC, defeated local rivals and promotion chasers Cambridge Nomads 2nds in a closely fought match on Saturday.

When the two sides met earlier in the season, Nomads had come away with a straight-forward 5-1 win and they started this game looking to continue that performance. Despite enjoying the majority of possession, however, Nomads were unable to fashion any clear cut opportunities and after fifteen minutes they were behind when the home side hit them on the counter-attack, Lukas Snetler finishing at the far post.

The lead didn't last long, as Nomads immediately hit back from a short corner. South were giving as good as they were getting and to prove that the first goal wasn't a fluke, they regained the lead ten minutes before half time when Eliot Read cleaned up a loose ball from a short corner. The lead was again short lived, though, as another Nomads short produced a second equaliser.

The second half saw Cambridge South controlling the pace of the game and the away team breaking forward on the counter attack. It wasn't until ten minutes from time that the home side managed to take the lead for the third time in the game, Lukas Snetler striking a marvellous reverse stick shot into the corner of the goal from the top of the D.

Staring defeat in the face, Nomads pushed forward in ever-greater desperation but South stood firm to record the victory. South captain Chris Baker was delighted with the result, commenting that "this was a well deserved and hard fought victory and demonstrates the progress the team is making this season".
