Men's 2nds lose to March Town 3

Cambridge South had their share of possession in an even game but were undone by a few mistakes, resulting in swift and successful counter attacks by March.

The first goal came as the South defence were still moving the goalposts to their correct position as a short corner was taken. March grabbed a second soon after when a shot from the omnipresent Gareth Hebbron bounced off a March body, giving a free hit from which March marched up the field to score at the other end.

Rob Barton got one back with a trademark reverse stick effort from long range as he displayed his usual tenacity and unwillingness to give up without at least a shot. South were unlucky not to get an equaliser as a spectacular Samin Ishtiaq shot from a narrow angle was ruled out.

In the second half March got two more breakaway goals as South lost the ball upfield. Keeper Lino Di Lorenzo, otherwise heroic diving at the feet of attackers all game, and distributing the ball well with long range kicks, was unable to stop these efforts as defenders scrambled to get back to assist. The home team did get one more goal from Rob Barton after the persistent Stuart Creed managed to fight his way through to the D to lay the ball off to Barton to score, again from… you've guessed it… a reverse stick effort.

South could have had another goal late on as Suk Pannu, again putting in a solid performance at the heart of midfield, launched a free hit into the D for John Greaves to deflect the ball into the net. Disallowed.

Mention should be made of Neil Sneade marking the March playmaker well, and the usual commitment to the cause of all South players.

Sadly, on this occasion, it was not enough.
