Cambridge South, proudly sponsored by PwC, grabbed a point from a hard fought draw with Market Deeping on Saturday. Market Deeping had won both encounters last season and are amongst the pre-season favourites to achieve promotion, but they were never comfortable in this game against a passionate Cambridge South.

Shortly into the first half, the visitors opened the scoring with a quick counter-attack. However, the home side soon took the lead themselves, through Chris Graveling, twice sweeping home from short corners, making it 6 goals in 2 games for the in-form sweeper. Market Deeping dug deep and hit back with an equaliser to force Cambridge onto the back foot, but the hosts were the next to score when Rob Garrett buried a shot into the corner from the top of the D.

Cambridge South scored again shortly after the break, Eliot Reed shooting home through a crowd, to make it 4-2. This prompted a period of sustained pressure from Market Deeping, which eventually resulted in two goals in quick succession. The final 15 minutes were frantic as the away side looked to steal all three points, but the home side's defence held firm.

Captain Chris Baker was pleased with the overall performance, commenting "This was a fiercely fought competitive match, which could have ended with either side gaining the 3 points. Overall on the balance of play a draw was a fair result and certainly for the neutrals it was a great game to watch."
