Men's 2nds lose to Wisbech Town 4

After an unusual warm up routine spent staring into the engine bay of the goalkeeper's stricken Renault on a garage forecourt somewhere near Chatteris, Cambridge South were up against it from the push back. The game was open and substitute GK Andy Bleach was quite busy even before he was unluckily passed by a deflected shot which took on a vicious spin before creeping in.

The away team had some decent posession and fashioned some good moves via both flanks and through the middle, with right midfielder Samin Ishtiaq and central midfield dynamos Suk Pannu and Tim Waller prominent. Many half chances resulted, but it was Wisbech who extended their lead with a long range effort in off a post soon after half time.

South got back into the game through skipper John Greaves's persistence in front of goal. He was not to be denied as the Wisbech keeper saved two efforts but when the ball rebounded to Greaves, he thumped it in over the keeper's legs from a narrow angle. Fellow forward Andy Lewis, and Tim Waller were unfortunate not to score as their shots went narrowly wide. It wasn't all one way traffic, as Kevin Pride demonstrated with a wondrous goalmouth stop soon after.

Unfortunately this was as good as it got, and Wisbech snatched two more goals right at the end as South pressed forward.

This was an even game played in good spirit, with a lack of real pressure in the attacking D and some desperation near the end proving to be South's downfall.
