Men's 3rds lose to local rivals Cambridge City

5 minutes of madness early in the second half led to an otherwise undeserved defeat as Camb City rattled in 3 goals. The first half saw a goal each which was a fair reflection of play. CSouth took the lead as John Greaves, appearing on the left wing, put in a thunderous cross for Tm Clapp to latch on to by the far post.

The away team had other chances, with Greaves himself going close, but it was City who grabbed an equaliser from a scrappy effort by an unmarked man after a goalmouth scramble.

Then the red mist descended as City scorted three more in quick succession, all from breakaway moves sending the ball at pace up the pitch, including one spectacular long range rasper, and another from a sublime aerial pass. This was a shame for the otherwise solid defender MarleyGloverJelly, although the large fast skillful City forwards would have been a handful in a higher league.

CSouth didn't give up and newcomer Nick Greaves and midfielders Paul South and Richard Yardley created some fine moves, using the width of the pitch where Rupert Espley and Tim Clapp kept up the momentum well, often getting the ball into the D where teammates lurked menacingly. Unfortunately the City keeper was playing a blinder, and all the pressure in the last 20 mins only resulted in one further goal. however it was the best of the day, as Dom Nelson cracked the ball joyously into the net with a magical reverse stick shot.

Ah well. This was a good match between two sides keen to play open, if physical, hockey, won by the team who were able to steal the ball three times in rapid succession, and get it up the opposition goal fast.

Player of the Match

For stepping up to the plate as substitute goalkeeper at the start, when he thought he was only there to spectate, and making some great saves, in spite of only having half the kit on.
